Human experience can be lonely and miserable. Some choices we make are simple moments of lessons learned and heeded. Others can thrust us into the deepest pit of suffering and despair in the blink of an eye. Help does not come easy. Clawing at the mud that is addiction makes for a lifelong struggle. It is a continuous battle searching for stable ground.
This collection captures the essence of chaos and relapse. Cries for help are ignored. Attempts to recover are met with indifference. It explores the hopelessness and breakdown experienced by those battling addiction, shedding light on the stigma that haunts them.
Addiction shows no mercy or remorse; it tracks every failure, as the suffering becomes fodder for those immune to it. The bottom dwellers are mocked, their struggles turned into jokes behind closed doors, while their dignity is forgotten. “Valedictorian of the Bottom Feeders” aims to reveal the harsh truths.
This chapbook offers a perspective from the depths, looking up through the harsh glare of judgment. It reveals the desperate attempts to keep up with societal pressures, even as we are consumed by addiction. The poems capture the guilt and toxicity that stain our fingers.
swallowing that difficult gulp
as the cold steel clicks its final clicks, &
the hand presses the back of the head,
it pushes you down and into the squad car.
never again will they speak
the same of you
for their paranoia has begun,
and everyone will tell a million lies
to lessen your character,
despite you having had the right to remain silent,
and your lips remained sealed tight.

Valedictorian of the Bottom-Feeders is a raw confession carved in verse—dark, defiant, and deeply human. James F. Miller II doesn’t just write about addiction; he drags you through its underbelly, where hope flickers like a dying bulb. These poems don’t ask for pity—they demand understanding. It’s heavy, honest, and necessary. This isn’t poetry that flirts with darkness; it lives there, then dares to speak from the silence. Write-on, James F. Miller II.

This collection of poetry and innovative thinking by James F. Miller II is a magnetic work of words. Miller always has a way with words, the connection of life and tragedy, hopelessness, mixed with light and darkness. The title is just the beginning for this imaginative truth of words, when life takes a downward spiral, hitting bottom, and sometimes staying there. It’s one of those collections you won’t soon forget. One of my favorite is “a pause (a pulse)” where he writes, “is this the end or just the beginning? just like the rememdy either are a trigger itched to become pulled, sit here and cry like that man right before his suicide or homicide…” Extremely powerful and raw words, painting an accurate picture of life. I look forward to reading more by this author. This book is a definite recommendation by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews.

Once you’ve read the works of this tortured writer, it becomes quite clear that Mr. Miller is speaking from experience. He truly understands the rise and fall from that unmistakable invincibility high that is promised, the depths of despair the addict is plunged into, the totality of power that addiction holds over a once innocent soul. Valedictorian of the Bottom Feeders is his voice, his journey.
Unless you have first hand knowledge, you can never fully grasp how completely powerless you become after you taste her decadent kiss. You become consumed by the longing for another sample of her sweetness. After she leaves, an indescribable veil of desperation and sorrow overcomes you. You are blinded by the need to find her. Nothing else is stronger than her call. You will risk everything for another chance to bow before her just once more. That is until she’s gone, and you hate what she has turned you into!
That evil ice queen, so cold.
Mr. Miller understands that even with as much as you hate her and yourself for allowing her to turn you into that wretched empty shell, you would give anything for that one more fleeting moment of pleasure she flaunts in front of you with tempting cruelty.
The ice queen promises adoration and love. True friends no longer exist. Betrayal is around every dark corner until you’re dead or locked away. Then you become insignificant, irrelevant, non-existent. The one’s who can’t escape, the ones who are permanently linked, despite their greatest efforts, will never see you as anything more than an embarrassment, the shameful family secret. The traitors who manage to break the link and deny their role in your downfall now spit on the very person they once bragged was their friend or lover. My dear Mr. Miller, I pray you rise out of the fiery flames of your own personal hell. Forgive yourself; for the ones who should truly be ashamed are the fakes and liars who abandon and deny their ties to a man they once called their friend!
I felt Mr. Miller’s words. I felt them to the very core of my being. That’s why his writing is so impactful. He has the power to heal a weary soul with his words. His writing is devastatingly beautiful. I hope his words can inspire those lost souls to escape their own bars and defeat their own demons before it’s too late. And above all else, I hope his writing garners empathy and compassion from those who sit high above and judge with disgust and ignorance. I hope they see that only through love and forgiveness can these lost souls find their way.
And by the way Jim,
You are not trash. Recycle yourself into something new, something more useful, stronger, better. SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL!!!
